[Water Wednesday] It reared its ugly head again.

“They’ll probably have a better candidate, so we’ll see. Surely there’s someone more qualified!”
- My friend, an accomplished professional, in a text to me about the likelihood of getting an interim position for a job she’s already an advisor for.

I sat in the parking lot, staring at my phone, hardly believing what I was reading. This is one of the most thorough and sincere people I know, making herself small.

This wasn’t cute self-depreciation to make her more relatable, nor was it a humble admission.

This was a dismissal of her accomplishments (numerous) and her credibility (far from trivial).

This is fear, cloaked in the barbed cloth of imposter syndrome.

Thankfully, my friend isn’t letting this stop her from applying for the position, but there are many who would, which makes me so frustrated I could scream.

So. Here is a your Water Wednesday drop of connection, reminders for you to carry with you:

  1. You are allowed to go for things that seem impossible.
  2. You’re allowed to change, to shift, to grow, to pack as much life and as many lives as you possible can into this one Earthly experience.
  3. Failure is part of the ride (see: growth)
  4. Your past accomplishments, lessons, and skills are valuable.
  5. No one else’s opinion of your life matters but your own. Yes, really.

The little urges and whispers you feel are nudging you toward something bigger than you could have imagined. Stop playing small, and go for it. Whatever “it” is.

I leave you with this question, and while it can be rhetorical, there’s 10 brownie points to those who respond:

What have you been avoiding?

Big hugs,

Quote I'm pondering

A classic:

"Never let the fear of striking out keep you from playing the game."
